We bought what turned out to be rotten pork chops this weekend.
Now before you lose your lunch – we almost did – at first glance, the pork looked fine – in its cellophane package. We had picked up an economy pack with about 6 chops in it, so did what we normally do when we buy in bulk, split it all into smaller, freezable portions.
I got one bag of 3 chops done, and then noticed a whiff of something ‘off’ – it smelled fishy and dusty. A bit like peaty dirt. Adam smelled it too. Raw meat really shouldn’t have an odour.
What was interesting is that Juno had zero interest in the pork chops. She didn’t sniff them in the bag at the door and she wasn’t underfoot while we were splitting them into freezer portions. In fact, she left the room part way through the process. That was really unusual.
Turned out we were able to alert the grocery store and get a refund. But the best part was that we could rely on Juno’s nose to let us know that something was really off with the meat. Lesson learned – trust that dog nose!
You can always trust a dog’s sense of smell. I would have been pretty surprised myself considering dogs love meat. Juno was probably disappointed, after all, fresh meat was off the menu.
Never even thought about using them to detect bad meat. I guess they can tell more than us.
Easy is not really a “food-detective” he likes rotten things from the trashcan… think I have to use my own nose :o)
I have a pretty good nose so we go with that. Cookie, actually, finds somewhat foul smelling meat that’s going bad quite intriguing. I guess she considers it well-aged. LOL
